I am trying to set up my new RS-HFIQ with WSJT-X on an old laptop. “RS-HFIQ Finder” is reporting “RS-HFIQ on COM5”. But with WSJT-X set to “HobbyPCB RS-HFIQ” and “COM5” I get “Rig failure Hamlib error: IO error while opening correction to rig.”

What am I missing?

AFAK you can't run WSJT-X directly with the RS-HFIQ. WSJT-X is designed to be connected to a SSB radio not an I and Q radio. You need some software (like HDSDR) that converts the audio signal coming from WSJT-X to the IQ signals needed for the radio and vice-versa.

The most common approach to doing this is to use virtual audio cables to 'connect' the audio in's and out's for HDSDR and WSJT-X and use virtual COM ports to connect the control signals.

There is a document that describes how to set this up for FLDIGI at the bottom of this page: https://sites.google.com/site/rshfiqtransceiver/home/faq-and-troubleshooting

It should be pretty easy to adapt this to WSJT-X.
